DIY Wedding Decor

Wedding season is far from being over, which can be happy news or nerve wracking news depending on your stage in the wedding game. We know that you want your wedding to be special and to reflect the personality of the happy couple. Whether you're the blissful bride, stressed out mother-of-the bride, first time wedding planner or a seasoned pro we have some projects that will add some personal flair to your wedding and keep some money in your pocket.

First and foremost, a very important rule for wedding decorations is COLOR! Have a color palette in mind but don't get uptight about it. Not everything at your wedding has to be the exact same shade of coral or aqua for it to be beautiful and cohesive. Adding some different shades and tones to your color scheme adds visual interest. Look how all of these different shades of aqua compliment each other. And if you give yourself a little slack in your color scheme then you will avoid the huge headache of making sure everything has to match perfectly.

We are big fans of adding a little sparkle to your wedding. It is the fastest way to change a simple crate or banner into a beautiful addition to any display!

Talk about some cute sparkle details! This simple Mr. & Mrs. banner is taken to another level with a little hodge-podge and gold glitter. When making this banner be aware that glitter can be a little bit of a mess. We recommend doing this project outside or in the tub so you can just rinse the glitter away when you are done. Once your banner is dry shake of the extra glitter to avoid a vacuuming nightmare at your venue.

Chalk board signs are also a great way to add a personal touch to any wedding. What could be more personalized then your own handwriting (or the better handwriting of a friend, no one needs to know you have chicken scratch handwriting on your big day). If you like the vibe of a chalkboard but don't actually love chalk itself then consider using a gold vinyl sticker. It is a fun twist that not a lot of people expect when they think of a chalkboard and a great bonus is that you never have to worry about it smudging. Plus gold is always a great option because it is neutral enough to go with almost any color scheme but it has a sheen that adds visual depth and a new texture to your wedding.

Can you guess what these adorable chalkboard table numbers are made out of?

If you guessed plain, old pencils then you're correct! Talk about a cheap and adorable replacement to expensive table numbers! All we did was take some #2 pencils and put a coat of gold spray paint on them and TA-DA they are transformed! Glue them to the back of your little chalk numbers and you're done! And it doesn't have to be gold, pick whatever color suits your wedding and go crazy.

Letters are also a great way to personalize a wedding and they are so versatile. Take this simple wood M for example, it would be easy to cover it in glitter, stain it, cover it in scrapbook paper, paint it or cover it in washi tape, the options really are endless. They can easily be transformed to match the vibe of your wedding.

This M was transformed into a fun guest book that will be forever treasured by the happy couple. If you are having a big event then consider multiple initials or an & to give guests more space to sign and leave their best wishes.

One element that has been in most of our images are paper fans. Paper fans are such an easy way to add a pop of color and a new texture to your wedding. Plus they are just paper so you know it is going to be easy on the budget. If you are feeling confident in your crafting abilities then you can buy scrapbook paper and make our own. If you're a rookie crafter then simply buy one of our kits! I can testify from personal experience that if you can staple two pieces of paper together then you will have wonderful success with the kit.

The best news in this whole blog post is that everything you need to create beautiful accents to your wedding or reception are available at ADORNit!

FLOPPY HATS 1010

In case you haven't noticed floppy hats have become a fashion necessity in recent months and we are here to tell you that you can totally ROCK a floppy hat. Floppy hats are not reserved for that perfectly trendy girl that we have all seen at the grocery store, they are for everyone! And we promise they really aren't as hard to style as you would think. If you follow us on Instagram or Facebook (if you don't you should start ASAP) we put floppy hats with tons of different outfits. We put them with everything from a simple tee, a button-up, blouses etc. You name it, a floppy hat goes with it. They add the perfect amount of flair to an outfit. They push it over the edge from cute and ordinary to FABulous!

If you're sitting there and saying that you don't have anything in your wardrobe that would go with a floppy hat then we are here to prove you wrong and to help you join the floppy hat bandwagon. Check out how cute this olive green floppy hat looks with just a simple graphic tee and a plaid shirt.

It you're nervous about choosing a colored hat then just think about your wardrobe. Do you have a lot of creams and tans or blacks and greys or is your closet full of rainbows? When picking a hat decide how strong of a statement you want to make. If you want to be more subtle then choose something that is similar to the color palette of your already established wardrobe. Like in this outfit we paired a dark olive green graphic tee with a littler olive green floppy hat. If you want to make more of a statement then don't be afraid to choose a color that doesn't necessarily match your wardrobe but it just goes with your wardrobe.
This is outfit is the perfect example of a color that goes but doesn't necessarily match. Another thing to consider when choosing your next colored floppy hat is your skin tone. Not every color goes with every girl and that's OK! We promise that you can enjoy this trend no matter your coloring! That is why we are happy to offer more then just one color of floppy hat, so everyone can enjoy this cute trend! This next outfit is a great example of adding some subtle contrast to an outfit.
Everything in this outfit is a neutral but choosing a black hat instead of a tan hat overall completes the outfit. It ties the black polka dots of her shirt into the complete outfit and makes her blonde hair POP! Mixing neutrals is an easy way to always look chic and to makes it easier to mix patterns and prints.
In this next picture we used a floppy hat to add a pop of color to this gorgeous blouse! We are total lovers of a classic black & white look but adding a burgundy hat just gives the outfit a modern twist and more visual interest.
Here is another great example of adding a pop of color to a black & white look. But do what makes you feel comfortable and what makes you feel like your most beautiful self. If you feel pretty in burgundy then wear burgundy.

If you feel beautiful in black then wear black.

Fashion is supposed to make you feel beautiful, not self-conscious. Be you, because being you is beautiful!

Transitions: Summer to Fall

We don't want to talk about it because it's an emotional subject, but summer is over. School has started and the leaves will start falling soon. (Or, if you live in Utah, the snow will start falling soon!) Transitioning your clothes from summer to fall is never the easiest task, but we have to do it. We at ADORNit are committed to making your transition seamless and less emotionally draining. The good news is: you don't have to get rid of your summer pieces! Put the boxes away! We're going to teach you some great tips to take your summer clothes straight into fall.

1. Change your sleeve length. Whether that's donning a cardigan, a cute jacket, or a a button down with your favorite summer blouse underneath, those summer pieces will keep you cool while that cardigan will keep you from those cool fall breezes.

2. Change up your accessories. Maybe you have a sheer swim cover up from summer that can easily be changed into a scarf for fall. Add a nice felt hat into your wardrobe! Instead of wearing one simple necklace in the summer, layer your necklaces.

3. Add tights. This one is super easy. You have a favorite summer dress? Add some tights! Tights are a seamless way to show that it's getting colder outside, but you're not afraid to wear your favorite summer skirts & dresses.

4.  Switch your shoes. I hate to break it to you, but those sandals are going to have to be packed up. Switch your sandals and flip flops for booties or sneakers. One small change is all you have to make to make a statement about the current season.

5. Change your makeup. Summer's over! You can easily change your makeup to make a statement that autumn has begun. Add a dark lipstick to your routine. Add some darker colored eyeshadow or liner, and layer that mascara! You're not swimming anymore, so it's okay to wear a little bit more makeup.

6. Jewel- toned colors. We know you have them in your closet-- the burgundy, the emerald, and that dark purple-- so take them out and wear them! If they're short sleeved or sleeveless, refer to tip number one!

7. Wear the jeans. If you're anything like us, you wore your jeans in the summer because you couldn't find cute enough shorts. Time to use them more often-- pair them with your booties, your button down, and your dark makeup. It screams autumn to us and you still look beautiful!

8. Infuse those neutrals. Neutrals work all year round and there's no denying that you've worn them in the summer too! Now that it's getting cooler, those neutrals will pair well with your jewel toned accessories and makeup!

Fashion 101: Pattern Mixing

We don't know about you, but there can be some scary things about fashion. It's usually when a new trend is comes in-- like pattern mixing. Pattern mixing has been around for a while, but it's hard to make sense of it. What pattern goes with what? What's too busy? What works and what are some pattern mixing don'ts? Don't worry, because we've got you covered here. We'll teach you all about the basics of pattern mixing!

1. Combine patterns of different sizes. Make sure you have one big print, and one smaller print. Mixing two big prints makes your outfit really loud and we definitely don't want that! They don't need to be incredibly small or big, but mixing patterns of different sizes will make your outfit look so much better and more pleasing to the eye.

2. Mix patterns in the same color family. Don't be incredibly matchy, but make sure that the shirt you're wearing has a similar color in the skirt you're pairing it with. Check out the examples below to show you how.

3. Look for patterns that complement each other. Some of the easiest patterns to mix without fail are polka dots, stripes, floral, and plaid. As long as you follow the rules above, there's no way you can fail at pattern mixing!

Have any more questions? Leave a comment below and we'll get back to you as soon as we can! Or you can stop by one of our stores and ask one of our associates. They're experts at this kind of thing!

Outfit Spotlight

There's nothing more we love than a cute article of clothing. Wait, yes there is. The thing we love the most in the world is, wait for it, a cute article of clothing with pockets. You heard us right! Is there anything better than pockets!? We vote no. And the news gets better (crazy, right?): we just got a shipment of the cutest tunic with pockets. And the best part is that this can be worn as a tunic with your favorite leggings or skinny jeans, or it can be used as a dress with our skirt extender.

We know, that's a lot of big news. Go ahead and process it, while we show you how cute it is when you wear it.

Tunic can be purchased here!
