How To: Spruce up Your Denim Shirt

For those of you who have been reading previous blog posts of mine you have probably figured out that before I joined the ADORNit family I was a bit of a stick in the mud when it came to fashion. I can't deny it, my eyes have now been opened to the wonderful world of layering, mixing patterns and prints and so much more. One thing that has remained the same and I guarantee will not change about my style preferences is that I absolutely love denim button ups! I don't if its the way that they are the perfect combo of causal and dressy or if denim is just such an iconic material that I'm drawn to it. The list could go on forever, bottom line it is just a great staple to have in your wardrobe. So consider this post to be my ode to the denim shirt. I want to make sure that this staple piece is getting continual love from you because it deserves it.
Let's start out by pairing our denim shirt with something girly.

Nothing says girly like a little sparkle or a chiffon floral fabric. Although both of these items are very different they both exude girly energy. Denim is a tougher fabric that can often have a masculine vibe to it. Layering the more masculine with an item that has a feminine feel is a great juxtaposition that gives your outfit both style and visual impact.
My personal recommendation when it comes to layering a denim shirt with a sweater like the first example is to make sure that you are wearing a denim shirt that is relatively fitted. Since denim is a slightly heaver material it is easier to pair it with a sweater if it is a fitted shirt so you don't feel like you a swimming in a sea of tangled layers.

Let's try a different combo, lets pair denim with plaid.
This is my favorite combo to show you today. Like I said previously I love the iconic look of a denim shirt and plaid holds the same iconic value of denim so it seems only natural to put them together. I know plaid and denim can read a little country at time (not that I have a problem with that) but it doesn't have to read that way. Take the first look for example, we have paired a plaid hoodie with a denim shirt underneath. Mixing the relaxed image of a hoodie with the more structured look of a denim button up gives you a casual yet put together street look that is always great to wear while running errands.
The second looks has just the slightest pop of plaid under a denim shirt that compliments a fun and classic striped tee. The combo of textures and patterns might seem like a little much but since the majority of the plaid is cover with the denim the combo just flows and has an ease to the whole outfit.

Finally the most classy of the denim plaid combos. This top is the perfect way to achieve an extra layered look while not actually having to put in much effort (that is my favorite kind of top). Adding a denim collar to this already adorable shirt takes it to the next level in the fashion game and add in a statement collar necklace and you just received the high score! Having all of these visual elements in one look might seem a little scary but it is actually the easiest way to look put together with minimal work. And when you really break it down it is simply a shirt over a button up. What's so scary about that?

Now, something cozy.
We all need a cozy look that we still feel put together in. Try pairing your favorite denim shirt with an over sized and comfy cardigan. It will be perfect for those cold winter days when one layer isn't going to cut it. I also recommend finding a cardigan that has some personality to it so you don't feel like you are blending into the crowd. I love the lace details on this first cardigan and the bold geometric patterns of the second and third cardigan. Also it's important to not forget about your accessories because an accessory is the fasted way to turn an average outfit into a styled look.

Moving on to something a little more unexpected.

Pair your denim shirt with something you have never done on the bottom! We always were jeans with fun and festive tops why not turn it upside down?! Adding a print or a texture on your legs is a fun way to mix up your daily denim uniform. My rule for mixing an unexpected bottom with your denim shirt is to ask yourself, would I pair this with jeans if it were a top? If the answer is yes then you are good to go! Fun aztec pants are not only trendy but they are so comfy! It is basically a socially acceptable way to wear pajama pants in public! I am slightly shocked that more people do not take advantage of this look. The lace skirt is a fun way to again fuse the ultra feminine with the slightly masculine. This combo might seem like it is mixing the casual and fancy genres a little to much but give it a try, you might surprise yourself.

And finally denim and tulle.
These last looks are a combo of our previous and first category, something unexpected and something girly. Here at ADORNit we have a fierce and continuing love affair with tulle skirts. They are just so feminine and so easy to wear with just about everything. I can think out countless women who have come into the store and have been intimidated or think they aren't girly enough to wear a tulle skirt. But once they try one on it hits them that they are girly enough to wear one and that it is just such a fun skirt to wear. You feel feminine, flirty and pretty. So like I have said multiple times before combining the soft and the hard of these materials is fun visual interest and gives people the idea that you know how to put clothes together! What is better than that?

I hope this post has renewed your love for your denim shirt and that you give it a little TLC this coming week!

How to Style Lace Skirts

In our previous post we featured this gorgeous red lace skirt for only $54.99

If you're anything like me you might look at this skirt and think,"that is so cute! I would love to buy that but I have no idea what I would wear it with". I feel your pain, before I started working at ADORNit all of my skirts were black or grey because it was too out of my comfort zone to buy a brightly colored or patterned skirt. I had a rule that if I could picture 5 outfits I could wear it with then I would consider buying it. I could never picture outfits that I could wear with skirts that had more pizazz or attitude then a plain black skirt. But my eyes have been opened now and I am so excited to show you five outfit ideas that might change your mind about buying a brightly colored skirt!

First let's keep it classic! Lace is such a beautiful and classy material that it only seems natural to pair it with something that has those same attributes. Something like pearls, pearls have and will always be a symbol of elegance and grace. So pair this lace skirt with a cardigan that has pearl accents along the neckline and you can't go wrong or out of style for that matter. This look is timeless.

The next outfit is a little less timeless and a little more modern. Most would pair this skirt with something simple on top in fear of creating too much business in one outfit. But we sure as heck aren't afraid of a little texture mixing! Add a fun metallic glitter top as an unexpected pop of shimmer and you will be the unexpected style icon at your next social gathering!

If that is a little to crazy for you then lets tone it down a little bit. This next outfit offers a very subtle hint of metallic shimmer. We have paired our lace skirt with a metallic striped tee that keeps it a little more casual but the shimmer maintains a certain level of glam. Our cute stylist Kelcee added a faux fur scarf that is always a winter necessity and a cute little pineapple belt to add a little taste of her fun and funky personality.

The remaining style ideas are going to take this skirt to a casual level. I know it is hard to believe hat a red lace skirt can ever read as casual. Hopefully I change your mind with the next couple outfits. When I think casual the first two things that come to mind are t-shirts and sweatshirts. And what a coincidence because that is exactly what we are going to be pairing this skirt with!

First t-shirts. In all honesty who doesn't love an adorable t-shirt? It has all the comfort of wearing a pajama shirt in public but all the style that you are comfortable in nearly every setting. It is a total win win situation. In our first outfit we have paired the skirt with a graphic tee with fun color block sleeves. My rule of thumb for mixing colors is the nature rule. All that means is that if you can think of a time that you have seen this color combo in nature then it will work together in an outfit. And I don't know about you but I have seen quite a few red flowers with yellow centers so this color combo is a thumbs up! If your a little hesitant to mix your colors then pick a cute tee that has some red in it so you remain comfortable with your shirt and skirt combo.

Our final outfit combo is with one of our adorable sweatshirts. Now when we say sweatshirt we don't mean your old ratty track sweatshirt from back in the day. Not that there is anything wrong with continually repping your school mascot, I personally still rock my purple kangaroo sweatshirt from time to time, yes my high school mascot really was a purple kangaroo. When we say sweatshirt at ADORNit that means that there has to be something a little extra special about it. This sweatshirt for instance has adorable beaded rhinestone details on the front and a rose gold half zipper on the back. Because this sweatshirt has fun and girly details it does mesh with the fun and flirty vibes that his skirt is putting out. Pair a lace skirt with a cute sweatshirt and you my friend are now rocking the comfiest outfit this planet has to offer.

I hope these outfit ideas have opened your eyes to the wonderful world of fun, funky and colored skirts!

What To Wear: Wedding Guest

We know as well as you do that when spring/summer rolls around, so do all the weddings. Maybe you've got one to attend, or maybe you've got 7 because all of your friends are getting married. We get that, we really do! Here's the thing though: no one likes to be an outfit repeater, especially at weddings. You're going to be in the wedding pictures at the reception and maybe you don't want to be caught wearing the same thing every time. So whether you're going to 1 or 10 weddings, we've got you covered with some outfit inspiration!

When going to a wedding, you want to look nice, but not too fancy that you get mistaken for a bridesmaid. Especially during summer weddings, we like a more casual and flowy look that will let you feel that nice summer breeze! This peach stripe maxi dress is perfect for that! Pair with a fun ruched-sleeve shirt underneath for more fun, or for cooler weather, pair with a denim jacket and sandals! Add some jewelry for a little bling and you're all set!

This floral craze doesn't seem to be coming to an end anytime soon, and we're not complaining! In fact, we're swooning! This Miss May skirt is the flirtiest and funnest way to say "I'm single and ready to mingle... at your wedding!" The bright colors go perfectly with the warm weather, but it's easy enough to cool down with this green cardigan which matches the green in the skirt just perfectly! Add a little more sparkle and a little more pink in with this pink bouquet necklace and you'll be ready to go in no time at all! Like the whole outfit? Purchase here for 15% off!

What To Wear: Mother of the Bride/Groom

So you're son/daughter is getting married! Congratulations! You're all excited, sad, nostalgic, and freaking out a little bit because you're in the wedding and you have to find something to wear! Well, we can't help with the nostalgia and the sadness that your little baby is all grown up, but we can help you find something to wear! We've got two great ideas for those spring and summer weddings that will keep you cool and from having to wear a mom-suit. (They're just not for everyone, ya know?)

This look is the perfect combination of comfortable and classy! This high-waisted flowy skirt is the perfect look to send your son/daughter off in style! Don't feel comfortable tucking a shirt into it? That's okay! Take a cardigan over it, and button it all (or most of) the way up! And don't think you can skimp out on jewelry either! Our black diamond necklace is sure to sparkle and give this outfit the extra oomph it needs! Buy the complete outfit here for 15% off!

We love this fun twist on the Mother of the Bride/Groom classic look! Instead of a pure pencil skirt, why not add some fringe to the bottom? Instead of a full blazer that might just have you melting, opt for a flowy vest instead! The subtle pink of the shirt paired with the bold black skirt will give you a lovely contrast that will accentuate your torso and actually make you appear thinner! For a more classic feel on this edgy ensemble, pair it with our pearl necklace! Purchase the full outfit here for 15% off.
